  Game Zone: Earth 2027

Toni waited in the control circle as the virtual control pad appeared again, making sure Cain and the other DreamBabes, were standing in their circles. Satisfied Toni moved the 'Activate' slider to the right. Each pad lit up with a dull golden colour, which reminded Toni of cinder toffee from her childhood. Using the destination selector, Toni chose the Greece 337 BC zone. That was the only zone she and Cain agreed 'the ancients' could mean. They were certain it was neither Mars 2176 nor Europe during the French revolution 1789.

:Portal users: six, set. Destination: Greece 337 BC, set.: Toni knew from Rahab informing her, 337 BC was the year after Macedonia beat Athens with its allies at Chaerone. Also, the year the League of Corinth founded. Toni took a breath then moved the slider across to travel. The pads flashed red, and a message appeared on the virtual control panel. 'Games zone restricted items in inventories. Check items marked in inventories—please place in long-term storage clan container. Items stored here will be accessible only in this game zone.’ The portal system powered down, the control panel disappeared.

"We have marked items in our inventories that need to stay here," Toni stepped out of the first circle. Everybody went through their inventories, placing the items the system had marked; every single gunpowder weapon handgun, rifle or machine gun along with all ammunition they carried went into the storage case. Although they could keep all HE rounds for the 40mm launcher.

They could keep their battle helmets and body armour though the ceramic plates stayed in the zone. First aid kits, and water they each kept. Cain retained both Ratole pelts and fur and his stash of old gold coins. Returning to the portal circles, Toni stood in the first circle and waited for the control panel. Resetting the controls to six travellers, Greece 337 BC, she then slid the 'Activate' slider.

The circles turned amber as Toni moved the slide each circle flashed a bright green. They then flashed a brilliant white, washing all colour from the room. They ported out.

None were left alone in this place, watching as the shower room lights extinguished. Following the shower room, lights extinguished throughout the different areas, the large room, kitchen and toilets, plunging the area into darkness. All dark except a dull light from the link corridor, emanating down the stairwell. Every light and appliance would in due course be extinguished when the system rebooted. Only triggering again when a player entered the area.

Cain watched fascinated, Toni’s hand moved over the virtual controls, he could feel the tension emanating from his Babes. The emotional links they shared, flowing into him. :Must be part of the gaming code, not something I’ve ever noticed when working with others before. This will work, I know it will I can feel it.: Cain understood in his mind this could not be real, he knew from experience it could not be real. Even knowing his body could not be broken into a stream of single atoms, the portal could not be real.

Irrespective of Cain's thoughts the bright light enveloped him, he was sure he could feel every single atom of his body splitting, being ripped apart by the portal. Splitting into a single stream of atoms as the light turned a brilliant white, leaving nothing behind. No feelings no sight no sound and no smells.

  Chapter 1

  Greece 337 BC

Impossible as it seemed, no sooner had the bright light flashed into existence than it had gone. The light left a large black spot floating in Cain’s eyes. He could feel the solidness of the ground beneath his feet, the breath of a gentle breeze caressing his face.

{Tell everybody to duck and lie on the ground in 4… 3… 2… Now,} Enoch said.

&nbs
p; "DUCK, and lie prostrate," Cain shouted and did himself. He could hear his women, his DreamBabes hitting the ground. He blinked to clear his sight, Cain turned his head toward what sounded like beating wings.

{Close your eyes, let me make adjustments… you can open your eyes now. I’ll let Rahab know how to help Toni. Quick or you may all die. You have one minute before it returns,} Enoch urged Cain.

Cain opened his eyes the black spot was gone he noticed they were in a small amphitheatre. Several stone tiers ringed the rocky ground he laid upon. He moved his arm then stopped his hand, knowing he now carried no distance offensive weapons on him, since he no longer had any guns. Hand-to-hand though was different, he had two combat knives, his hands and powered legs.

By the retaining wall at the edge of the seating tier sat a large wooden chest. There appeared to be no internal lock nor padlock. He looked at the DreamBabes and noticed Toni had moved and was kneeling beside the chest, touching it with a hand keeping her balance.

"Everyone, keep blinking your eyes, helps with clearing the black spots, listen for Toni or me, if we shout move, move in the direction we say. We are nearby, shout or message us if you do not get your sight back," Cain said as he crab-crawled across the ground. Once he reached the wooden chest, he knew better than opening such an inviting object, as tempting as it may be.

"I preferred the other game zone, at least we could see there and we had guns to shoot at creatures and people," said Daphne. The other DreamBabes near her agreed.

"So, what now?" said Toni. She examined the other sides of the locked wooden chest. Only three sides of the chest were visible, seeing no holes for poisonous darts, or hidden keyholes. Toni rolled her wrist, palm up hand moving over the chest. Cain being cautious, jammed one of his combat knives into the stout wooden lid. Taking a length of the Ratole rope, Cain fastened it to the combat knife's handle he’d forced into the wooden lid.

"Up there with me," Cain said to Toni, pointing higher up the seating. Together they climbed across the first two tiers of stone seating, little more than steps. Cain attempted pulling the rope, nothing happened as the angle was not right, the lid stayed closed.

"Here I’ll be your pivot point," Toni laughed. Having looped the rope over her shoulder. She gave Cain a quick kiss before standing saying. "Pull now," then she whispered, "I love you."

Cain smiled, he pulled hard on the rope until the chest's lid sprang open. Toni's shoulder making an excellent pivot point. A green gaseous cloud billowed out from the wooden chest, moving like it had a mind of its own.

Feeling like the cloud was chasing them, Toni and Cain scooted back into the third tier of seating. The green cloud billowed around the wooden chest and over the first tier of seats. It hung in the air for about ten rapid breaths before dissipating.

As it cleared, Cain turned to Toni his left hand gently touching her face, seeing her smile, and gave her a deep kiss.

"I love you, you know that right?" he said. Toni told him she knew, she’d known for a long time, well before he’d saved her, though she would not tell him, it was a woman's prerogative to know such things.

"That was all the confirmation I needed, you knuckle head," she added then returned his kiss. "The wind has displaced the green gas. It has gone, you suppose we can risk going down? Let’s take a gander before we grab whatever goodies it holds before sharing them out?" Toni asked, returning Cain's kiss and hug.

They climbed back to the ground, both peering into the chest, side by side holding hands; looking at the chest's inventory. The wooden chest’s inventory was full of weapons and clothing from the time period of 337 BC.

Selections of round shields, long spears, bronze swords, composite bows, a few arrows and empty quivers. There were also several items of clothing to choose from. The strangest items were small stoppered jars with a string around their necks. Cain selected everything and messaged the team.

{Incoming in ten seconds, get behind your shields, look toward the sun,} Enoch told Cain

"Equip your largest shield and a six-foot Doru spear, kneel behind the shield. Lift your spear pointing it at a forty-five-degree angle, tuck the shaft under your elbow. Now, then look toward the sun, keep your eyes cast down," Cain bellowed doing the same, while Toni followed everyone else.

They took eight seconds to arrange themselves as Cain asked. A sudden loud roaring filled the air, making the loose dirt on the ground vibrate, small pieces raised in the air. The downdraught of beating wings blew the vibrating dust everywhere. They ducked behind their shields as small pebbles rattled against the shields’ surfaces. Cain turned his head and heard Toni swear.

"What the blazes, that looks like it’s a flipping Griffin, a huge red and golden scaled Griffin. It’s turning back, GET READY!" They placed their bodies behind their flimsy shields as Sophie shouted,

"Dragon. It’s an immature dragon, not a Griffin, keep behind your shields, keep your spears out." The immature dragon banked as it flew overhead. Cain dropped his shield and spear, equipping the composite bow from his inventory and fastening the quiver to his belt.

He trusted the bow was the game zone's time-line equivalent to the Glock. Closing his eyes he pulled an imaginary arrow from the quiver, feeling the wood of the shaft and feathers of the fletching upon his fingers as he nocked it. Opening his eyes, Cain took a draw aiming in front of the dragon’s flight. Letting out his breath, Cain loosed his first arrow as his hand retrieved and nocked another arrow.

Cain followed up his first shot, the arrow aiming at the dragon’s head as it began a slow turn.

"What is a dragon doing in Greece? They are not part of their mythology... Are they?" shouted Cain. He watched as both his arrows neared the dragons head a second apart. You could hear Cain’s mouth popping open, his arrows passed through the dragon’s head. The arrows caused no damage but forced the image to waver like rippling silk before disappearing.

"What?" said Toni. Her mouth, open in surprise as both of Cain's arrows passed through the dragon.

"Illusion spell. Somebody anchored the spell to an object, somewhere in the auditorium," said Lesley from behind her shield. "Be careful as it will have a defensive spell protecting the object."

Everyone stowed shields and spears in their inventories as fast as they could, then began a detailed search of the auditorium. Cain moved across one side of the third tier of stone seating, Toni mirrored his movements, on the opposite side, working in unison tier by tier.

Lesley and Bethany jogged rather than walked down the steps leading beneath the seating. While Sophie and Daphne proceeded up the seating tiers, checking behind each tier across from Cain and Toni.

"Could this be it?" said Daphne as she used her spear pointing at the oriental coloured vase.

"It seems strange, an unusual piece of pottery, not Greek looking more likely from another country. Do you want to or should I message everyone? Ask for their presence in joining us, viewing the vase and decide together," Sophie replied. Still pointing at the vase, Daphne said,

"This vase could be Ming dynasty, from around the fourteenth or fifteenth century. Not the third century BC."

A few moments later everybody stood, clustered two tiers below and behind Sophie and Daphne. Sophie used her shield skill, casting a shield spell around the vase. Sophie pointed her hand, though she had no need as her shield spell scooped the vase off the ground.

They flinched as the vase floated up from the ground, expecting the worst as Sophie manoeuvred the vase in the air. She used her magic and lifted the vase over all the stone seats, then over and beyond the outer wall, before releasing her shield spell.

With the spell released, the vase vanished from sight as it disappear
ed behind the wall. The sound of a vase smashing as it hit the floor reached their ears. They each relaxed as the vase dropped from sight until the sound of the vase breaking. Their relaxing lasted less than a second until a large tongue of flames roared toward the sky, they reached high above the back of the seating area, several times higher than all the tiers.

"Well, it was a good job nobody tried moving that or worse breaking it accidentally where it was. I bet the spell would have covered the whole of the seating area," said Toni. "If you look at the back of the stone, you can tell several areas where they have suffered serious burn damage before. Perhaps we are not the first players to have come visit this game zone amphitheatre."

  Camping Out

With everybody now armed again, they made a quick check of the site. Bethany along with Lesley, walked into the small tunnel beneath the seating. They reached the tunnels end and were forced to make a right turn. Something blocked the left turn, an accumulation built up over time of rocks and earth, barring their progress. As they neared the end of the right hand tunnel the light brightened. Leaving the tunnel passing through the outer wall of the amphitheatre seating, Lesley and Bethany stood on an area of paved stone; in the centre was a smooth circular pillar.

:The pillar is easily over ten feet tall but shorter than Cain with Toni on his shoulders.: Lesley thought as she and Bethany walked up to the pillar, they noticed lots of Greek inscriptions on its surface. They walked around the pillar noticing the writing changed, on the reverse surface were Egyptian hieroglyphs.
